PropertyValue — Schema.org Type, Hierarchy & Properties

Learn about Schema.org PropertyValue: parent types, child types, property value relationships and official references. Independent local educational guide.

Source: Schema.org v30.1 offline vocabulary. Official PropertyValue definition.

What is PropertyValue?

A property-value pair, e.g. representing a feature of a product or place. Use the 'name' property for the name of the property. If there is an additional human-readable version of the value, put that into the 'description' property.\n\n Always use specific schema.org properties when a) they exist and b) you can populate them. Using PropertyValue as a substitute will typically not trigger the same effect as using the original, specific property.

Example JSON-LD skeleton

This minimal example only identifies a Schema.org type. It is not a complete entity, a Google rich-result test, or a claim about a real business.

Full parent hierarchy

Each chain starts at a root type. Multiple paths are shown when Schema.org defines more than one parent. For very complex types, up to 256 paths are displayed; consult the official definition for the full graph.

PropertyOn typesDescription
additionalPropertyMerchantReturnPolicy or Offer or Place or Product or QualitativeValue or QuantitativeValueA property-value pair representing an additional characteristic of the entity, e.g. a product feature or another characteristic for which there is no matching property in schema.org.\n\nNote: Publishers should be aware that applications designed to use specific schema.org properties (e.g. https://schema.org/width, https://schema.org/color, https://schema.org/gtin13, ...) will typically expect such data to be provided using those properties, rather than using the generic property/value mechanism.
associatedDiseaseBioChemEntityDisease associated to this BioChemEntity. Such disease can be a MedicalCondition or a URL. If you want to add an evidence supporting the association, please use PropertyValue.
exifDataImageObjectexif data for this object.
hasMolecularFunctionBioChemEntityMolecular function performed by this BioChemEntity; please use PropertyValue if you want to include any evidence.
hasRepresentationBioChemEntityA common representation such as a protein sequence or chemical structure for this entity. For images use schema.org/image.
identifierThingThe identifier property represents any kind of identifier for any kind of [[Thing]], such as ISBNs, GTIN codes, UUIDs etc. Schema.org provides dedicated properties for representing many of these, either as textual strings or as URL (URI) links. See [background notes](/docs/datamodel.html#identifierBg) for more details.
isInvolvedInBiologicalProcessBioChemEntityBiological process this BioChemEntity is involved in; please use PropertyValue if you want to include any evidence.
isLocatedInSubcellularLocationBioChemEntitySubcellular location where this BioChemEntity is located; please use PropertyValue if you want to include any evidence.
recipeIngredientRecipeAn ingredient or ordered list of ingredients and potentially quantities used in the recipe, e.g. 1 cup of sugar, flour or garlic. The ingredients can be represented as free text or more structured values.
specificationProductA specification of the product, often grouped by a section header/name. This is a cleaner alternative to additionalProperty for strict retail product specifications.
taxonRankTaxonThe taxonomic rank of this taxon given preferably as a URI from a controlled vocabulary – typically the ranks from TDWG TaxonRank ontology or equivalent Wikidata URIs.
valueReferencePropertyValue or QualitativeValue or QuantitativeValueA secondary value that provides additional information on the original value, e.g. a reference temperature or a type of measurement.
variableMeasuredDataset or ObservationThe variableMeasured property can indicate (repeated as necessary) the variables that are measured in some dataset, either described as text or as pairs of identifier and description using PropertyValue, or more explicitly as a [[StatisticalVariable]].
variesByProductGroupIndicates the property or properties by which the variants in a [[ProductGroup]] vary, e.g. their size, color etc. Schema.org properties can be referenced by their short name e.g. "color"; terms defined elsewhere can be referenced with their URIs. Variant properties can be provided using [[PropertyValue]] instead of plain [[Text]], to allow specification of the values available for a variant property.

Properties usable on PropertyValue (23)

This list includes properties whose domainIncludes names PropertyValue or one of its ancestors. DomainIncludes is advisory; it is not an exhaustive set of permitted properties.

PropertyExpected value typesDescription
additionalTypeText, URLAn additional type for the item, typically used for adding more specific types from external vocabularies in microdata syntax. This is a relationship between something and a class that the thing is in. Typically the value is a URI-identified RDF class, and in this case corresponds to the use of rdf:type in RDF. Text values can be used sparingly, for cases where useful information can be added without their being an appropriate schema to reference. In the case of text values, the class label should follow the schema.org <a href="https://schema.org/docs/styleguide.html">style guide</a>.
alternateNameTextAn alias for the item.
descriptionText, TextObjectA description of the item.
disambiguatingDescriptionTextA sub property of description. A short description of the item used to disambiguate from other, similar items. Information from other properties (in particular, name) may be necessary for the description to be useful for disambiguation.
identifierPropertyValue, Text, URLThe identifier property represents any kind of identifier for any kind of [[Thing]], such as ISBNs, GTIN codes, UUIDs etc. Schema.org provides dedicated properties for representing many of these, either as textual strings or as URL (URI) links. See [background notes](/docs/datamodel.html#identifierBg) for more details.
imageImageObject, URLAn image of the item. This can be a [[URL]] or a fully described [[ImageObject]].
mainEntityOfPageCreativeWork, URLIndicates a page (or other CreativeWork) for which this thing is the main entity being described. See [background notes](/docs/datamodel.html#mainEntityBackground) for details.
maxValueNumberThe upper value of some characteristic or property.
measurementMethodDefinedTerm, MeasurementMethodEnum, Text, URLA subproperty of [[measurementTechnique]] that can be used for specifying specific methods, in particular via [[MeasurementMethodEnum]].
measurementTechniqueDefinedTerm, MeasurementMethodEnum, Text, URLA technique, method or technology used in an [[Observation]], [[StatisticalVariable]] or [[Dataset]] (or [[DataDownload]], [[DataCatalog]]), corresponding to the method used for measuring the corresponding variable(s) (for datasets, described using [[variableMeasured]]; for [[Observation]], a [[StatisticalVariable]]). Often but not necessarily each [[variableMeasured]] will have an explicit representation as (or mapping to) an property such as those defined in Schema.org, or other RDF vocabularies and "knowledge graphs". In that case the subproperty of [[variableMeasured]] called [[measuredProperty]] is applicable. The [[measurementTechnique]] property helps when extra clarification is needed about how a [[measuredProperty]] was measured. This is oriented towards scientific and scholarly dataset publication but may have broader applicability; it is not intended as a full representation of measurement, but can often serve as a high level summary for dataset discovery. For example, if [[variableMeasured]] is: molecule concentration, [[measurementTechnique]] could be: "mass spectrometry" or "nmr spectroscopy" or "colorimetry" or "immunofluorescence". If the [[variableMeasured]] is "depression rating", the [[measurementTechnique]] could be "Zung Scale" or "HAM-D" or "Beck Depression Inventory". If there are several [[variableMeasured]] properties recorded for some given data object, use a [[PropertyValue]] for each [[variableMeasured]] and attach the corresponding [[measurementTechnique]]. The value can also be from an enumeration, organized as a [[MeasurementMethodEnum]].
minValueNumberThe lower value of some characteristic or property.
nameTextThe name of the item.
ownerOrganization, PersonA person or organization who owns this Thing.
potentialActionActionIndicates a potential Action, which describes an idealized action in which this thing would play an 'object' role.
propertyIDText, URLA commonly used identifier for the characteristic represented by the property, e.g. a manufacturer or a standard code for a property. propertyID can be (1) a prefixed string, mainly meant to be used with standards for product properties; (2) a site-specific, non-prefixed string (e.g. the primary key of the property or the vendor-specific ID of the property), or (3) a URL indicating the type of the property, either pointing to an external vocabulary, or a Web resource that describes the property (e.g. a glossary entry). Standards bodies should promote a standard prefix for the identifiers of properties from their standards.
sameAsURLURL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity. E.g. the URL of the item's Wikipedia page, Wikidata entry, or official website.
subjectOfCreativeWork, EventA CreativeWork or Event about this Thing.
unitCodeText, URLThe unit of measurement given using the UN/CEFACT Common Code (3 characters) or a URL. Other codes than the UN/CEFACT Common Code may be used with a prefix followed by a colon.
unitTextTextA string or text indicating the unit of measurement. Useful if you cannot provide a standard unit code for <a href='unitCode'>unitCode</a>.
urlURLURL of the item.
valueBoolean, Number, QualitativeValue, StructuredValue, TextThe value of a [[QuantitativeValue]] (including [[Observation]]) or property value node.\n\n* For [[QuantitativeValue]] and [[MonetaryAmount]], the recommended type for values is 'Number'.\n* For [[PropertyValue]], it can be 'Text', 'Number', 'Boolean', 'StructuredValue' or 'QualitativeValue'.\n* Use values from 0123456789 (Unicode 'DIGIT ZERO' (U+0030) to 'DIGIT NINE' (U+0039)) rather than superficially similar Unicode symbols.\n* Use '.' (Unicode 'FULL STOP' (U+002E)) rather than ',' to indicate a decimal point. Avoid using these symbols as a readability separator.
valueGroupTextA header or section name for grouping related property values.
valueReferenceDefinedTerm, Enumeration, MeasurementTypeEnumeration, PropertyValue, QualitativeValue, QuantitativeValue, StructuredValue, TextA secondary value that provides additional information on the original value, e.g. a reference temperature or a type of measurement.
