Property — Schema.org Type, Hierarchy & Properties

Learn about Schema.org Property: parent types, child types, property value relationships and official references. Independent local educational guide.

What is Property?

A property, used to indicate attributes and relationships of some Thing; equivalent to rdf:Property.

Example JSON-LD skeleton

This minimal example only identifies a Schema.org type. It is not a complete entity, a Google rich-result test, or a claim about a real business.

Full parent hierarchy

Each chain starts at a root type. Multiple paths are shown when Schema.org defines more than one parent. For very complex types, up to 256 paths are displayed; consult the official definition for the full graph.

Properties that accept Property values (6)

PropertyOn typesDescription
constraintPropertyConstraintNodeIndicates a property used as a constraint. For example, in the definition of a [[StatisticalVariable]]. The value is a property, either from within Schema.org or from other compatible (e.g. RDF) systems such as DataCommons.org or Wikidata.org.
inverseOfPropertyRelates a property to a property that is its inverse. Inverse properties relate the same pairs of items to each other, but in reversed direction. For example, the 'alumni' and 'alumniOf' properties are inverseOf each other. Some properties don't have explicit inverses; in these situations RDFa and JSON-LD syntax for reverse properties can be used.
measuredPropertyObservation or StatisticalVariableThe measuredProperty of an [[Observation]], typically via its [[StatisticalVariable]]. There are various kinds of applicable [[Property]]: a schema.org property, a property from other RDF-compatible systems, e.g. W3C RDF Data Cube, Data Commons, Wikidata, or schema.org extensions such as [GS1's](https://www.gs1.org/voc/?show=properties).
statTypeStatisticalVariableIndicates the kind of statistic represented by a [[StatisticalVariable]], e.g. mean, count etc. The value of statType is a property, either from within Schema.org (e.g. [[median]], [[marginOfError]], [[maxValue]], [[minValue]]) or from other compatible (e.g. RDF) systems such as DataCommons.org or Wikidata.org.
supersededByClass or Enumeration or PropertyRelates a term (i.e. a property, class or enumeration) to one that supersedes it.
variableMeasuredDataset or ObservationThe variableMeasured property can indicate (repeated as necessary) the variables that are measured in some dataset, either described as text or as pairs of identifier and description using PropertyValue, or more explicitly as a [[StatisticalVariable]].

Properties usable on Property (17)

This list includes properties whose domainIncludes names Property or one of its ancestors. DomainIncludes is advisory; it is not an exhaustive set of permitted properties.

PropertyExpected value typesDescription
additionalTypeText, URLAn additional type for the item, typically used for adding more specific types from external vocabularies in microdata syntax. This is a relationship between something and a class that the thing is in. Typically the value is a URI-identified RDF class, and in this case corresponds to the use of rdf:type in RDF. Text values can be used sparingly, for cases where useful information can be added without their being an appropriate schema to reference. In the case of text values, the class label should follow the schema.org <a href="https://schema.org/docs/styleguide.html">style guide</a>.
alternateNameTextAn alias for the item.
descriptionText, TextObjectA description of the item.
disambiguatingDescriptionTextA sub property of description. A short description of the item used to disambiguate from other, similar items. Information from other properties (in particular, name) may be necessary for the description to be useful for disambiguation.
domainIncludesClassRelates a property to a class that is (one of) the type(s) the property is expected to be used on.
identifierPropertyValue, Text, URLThe identifier property represents any kind of identifier for any kind of [[Thing]], such as ISBNs, GTIN codes, UUIDs etc. Schema.org provides dedicated properties for representing many of these, either as textual strings or as URL (URI) links. See [background notes](/docs/datamodel.html#identifierBg) for more details.
imageImageObject, URLAn image of the item. This can be a [[URL]] or a fully described [[ImageObject]].
inverseOfPropertyRelates a property to a property that is its inverse. Inverse properties relate the same pairs of items to each other, but in reversed direction. For example, the 'alumni' and 'alumniOf' properties are inverseOf each other. Some properties don't have explicit inverses; in these situations RDFa and JSON-LD syntax for reverse properties can be used.
mainEntityOfPageCreativeWork, URLIndicates a page (or other CreativeWork) for which this thing is the main entity being described. See [background notes](/docs/datamodel.html#mainEntityBackground) for details.
nameTextThe name of the item.
ownerOrganization, PersonA person or organization who owns this Thing.
potentialActionActionIndicates a potential Action, which describes an idealized action in which this thing would play an 'object' role.
rangeIncludesClassRelates a property to a class that constitutes (one of) the expected type(s) for values of the property.
sameAsURLURL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity. E.g. the URL of the item's Wikipedia page, Wikidata entry, or official website.
subjectOfCreativeWork, EventA CreativeWork or Event about this Thing.
supersededByClass, Enumeration, PropertyRelates a term (i.e. a property, class or enumeration) to one that supersedes it.
urlURLURL of the item.
