Try the live tool: Open Sitemap Validator & Generator — Check and Create XML →
What this tool does
Validate an XML urlset or sitemap index and generate a standards-shaped sitemap.xml from user-supplied URLs.
1. Validate an existing XML file
Paste XML or select a local file. Click Validate XML sitemap to inspect loc elements, duplicate URLs, dates, namespace and format issues.
2. Prepare a new sitemap
Enter one absolute HTTP(S) URL per line. To supply a genuine modification date, add | YYYY-MM-DD after the URL.
3. Generate, send to validator and review
Click Generate sitemap.xml, inspect the escaped XML output, then choose Send generated XML to Validator to fill the XML input automatically. Click Validate XML sitemap, download the result if needed, and use Clear all fields & results before a different site.
Practical example
Two URLs, https://example.com/ and https://example.com/about/, generate two url elements; the first may have a real lastmod date.
Limits and responsible use
The generator accepts up to 5,000 user-provided URLs. The validator inspects XML only and does not crawl pages or fetch sitemap-index child files; the standard per-sitemap maximum is 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed.
Keep the original markup for comparison. Review facts against the real page, and use the dated Google feature catalogue or official Google Search Central documentation where relevant. A local check is not a search-ranking or rich-result guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
Answers are educational. FAQ markup does not guarantee Google FAQ rich results.
Will this tool crawl my website automatically?
No. The generator uses only the URLs you paste.
Does the validator check child sitemap files?
No. A sitemap index is inspected locally; referenced child files are not downloaded.
Can I include lastmod dates?
Yes, if they represent actual significant page updates. Do not invent modification dates.
